It's purpose is not to cool the trans fluid, but to warm it up during winter months.The trans fluid doesn't move through any fins in the radiator. If you want to cool your trans fluid, you'll need to use a seperate cooler with some type of fins.
My '69 El Camino was built with a Powerglide, but the previous (or previous previous?) owner converted it to a TH350. I destroyed the old cooler lines when I removed the engine, so I had to replace the cooler lines.
