The air pump only uses a tiny amount of the engines power to operate, your power steering pump draws more power out of the engine than it.

It also makes the engine tidier.removes some weight too. after you remove the pump and the metal line coming from the back of the the heads, you need to plug those up or it will sound like you are running no mufflers.
