Actually Ford service manual says to torque inner nut to 50 ft-lbs, while rotating wheel back and forth to seat bearings. Then back nut off 90 degrees. After installing lock ring, install outer lock nut and torque to 50-80 ft-lbs. Hope this helps. This is what I did when i redid my D44 and have had no issues.
