Discussion starter · #1 · Nov 24, 2020. 2012 XLT. When in 2wd the transfer case hums, like bad noisy tires. First snow today needed 4wd for a bit and the noise went completely away. When I switch back and forth the noise goes away in 4x4 but returns when I switch back to 2wd. There is no out of the ordinary operation of the t case in 2wd.

I've had IWE's replaced before and this definitely doesn't sound like the IWE's. The truck is lifted on 35 nitto ridge grapplers and it's definitely not the tire...This is a obviously a stress point on the vacuum hose to the left side IWE. Fixed it with a plastic tubing connector that I had on-hand from old windshield washer tubing. If your driver's side IWE is grinding particularly when making a left turn and you have a 2011-14 F150, check this first. My tubing splice works fine.

F150 IWE failure. I had my IWE's (front auto locking hubs) go out on my 2016 F150 at about 45000 miles. Symptoms included a metallic clattering noise when driving in 2H, usually on acceleration, also trouble engaging 4H or would not engage at all. They were covered under the factory powertrain warranty and replaced by Ford.

For a little background as soon as I get the kit installed and drove the truck I noticed the front left tire had a horrible humming sound.I learned about IWE the hard way, by damaging them. I will explain how they work, how to replace them, and how to test them.If it is a vacuum leak you will need to fix that before you completely damage the IWE and have to replace that as well. In the meantime, if you need to drive the truck you can do 1 of 2 things: 1. Use 4A if you have it. 2. Unplug the power connector on the solenoid. On the firewall, driver's side.
