After we visited Chichen Itza, we went to Valladolid for lunch and to wander a bit - it is a nice town, which we enjoyed very much. We thought it would definitely make a nice base for visiting the local area - and if we were staying more than 1 night in the area, I would definitely choose Valladolid rather than staying out at the site.

A taxi ride would cost a fortune. We did the Chichen Itza tour for 84 bucks with Cancun Line and yes, it is looong loong long! (They take you to a souvenir shop for a restroom break, then to Chichen Itza for two hours--one hour with the guide one hour by yourself, then to a restaurant and then to a Cenote.
