I took a few sleeping pills and slept expecting my character to be a zombie by morning but instead he was in good health.

Heavier items will provide more but can cause you to over heat. Resilient will reduce the chance you get infected from a laceration or scratch. Bites are always 100% guaranteed to infected you. Don't get bit. Your best bet is to not get grabbed. Once you are infected with the zombie virus there's no slowing or stopping it.

The zombie infection is different to a wound infection. It won't say you're infected on the health panel but after a few days you'll get queesy and then you'll get hungry and eventually your health will just start to go down until you die.
