Yeah, use gathering, mystery shop, ruins, zombie lair, trading post, arena and do quests/events. Save diamonds for wood and not speedups (dumb but necessary).

The yellow bar, use it when you can for rallies on zombie lairs or fighting single zombies on the map. Think of it this way: the second build q gives you 168 build hours. The same diamond purchase only gives you 5 hours of speed power ups. I see you already bought it so my answer won't matter but it may help others.
