Having this problem now. 500 mods installed and it's the Bethesda verified creation club mods that crash my game. I think I figured out the problem. I saved before upgrading, saved the enchanting table upgrade for last like everyone says. It still crashed. I reloaded, and thought to try and close the secret entrance.

They only keep the armor on if they are actively following you. They may stay in the armor as long as you dismiss them and stay in the same cell as them. But the minute you are in a different cell they will revert to their base armor/clothing. The only in game work around is to get perfect touch perk from Pickpocket, steal their base armor.
