To answer the question. No the game is not dead. You have problems finding games mainly due to your region you live in. Unlike previous cod games, matchmaking here prevents you from joining servers where your ping is to high thus you are locked out from most world servers and can mainly play in only your regions servers.

Uninstall the game, disconnect external drive, reinstall game on internal, stay at the very first screen for a few minutes, then it should work once you press A.
